Providing both good nutrition and taste, coconut water is in tune with the growing health and wellness trend. This popular yet sensitive product brings with it many opportunities, but also a few challenges.
A functional and low sugar alternative to 100% juice, coconut water continues to make significant gains globally, with new product introductions steadily increasing over the last three years.
There is a global trend to make beverages feel more nutritious, creating products where consumers get the experience of having a solid fruit in liquid form, more reminiscent of a snack than a traditional juice. For coconut water, this means adding softened chunks made from the coconut meat, called nata de coco, to the water. The trend is big in Asia, but new opportunities in other markets are opening up as well.
Tetra Pak was the first company to introduce aseptically-packed coconut water that could be stored for long periods and packaged without altering its natural texture or nutritional value. The fresh coconut water is a sensitive product; shortly after the coconut is opened the decomposition process starts. With our processing solutions and by packing the coconut water in a shelf stable carton package, the water stays fresh for several months, and the consumer is guaranteed a fresh and healthy coconut water drink.
