Tethered caps for Tetra Pak® carton packages

Tethered caps are the latest additions to our range of openings and closures, allowing you to achieve your ambitions in three essential areas – food safety, food waste, and the environment – simultaneously. We have now developed and introduced eight different solutions to ensure we deliver benefits for producers and consumers alike, from a reduced percentage of plastic to greater functionality.

Preventing litter

The EU Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Directive, which mandates that single-use beverage containers made with plastic will only be allowed on the market if their caps and lids remain attached, came into force in July 2024. The directive is an integral part of the EU's wider approach announced in their Plastics Strategy and an important element of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. In 2021, we began the deployment of our tethered caps and, as of June 2024, we have delivered 12 billion caps reaching over half a billion consumers in Europe. We will continue to expand our tethered cap portfolio, including plant-based options using sugarcane-based polymers or ISCC-certified recycled polymers.1

TwistCap™ OSO Barrier 34 Pro

The TwistCap OSO Barrier 34 Pro is a one-step screw cap with improved barrier properties against oxygen transmission for high acid ambient distribution (HAAD) and available for Tetra Rex® packages. The proportions of the closure give a good grip and good control of pouring. Suitable for ambient juices, it protects the product for 6-12 months, depending on filled product characteristics. It is based on a screw opening mechanism with tethered strings that keep the lid attached to the package. This one-step opening comes with a moulded tamper band which ensures that the product hasn't already been opened. It is available in multiple colours, allowing it to fit seamlessly into any packaging design.

Easy to Use is the Rheumatism Association's certification of products and packaging. The certification is unique and is based on product tests conducted by individuals with impaired hand function. The Rheumatism Association's test is a scientifically developed method, aiming to provide a supportive tool for manufacturers and producers of products.

A product is tested by a panel consisting of individuals with impaired hand function. The panel's assessment is verified through comparison with a larger reference group, as each test panel is unique. By combining the panel's abilities and assessment of the product, a standardized evaluation of the product's usability for people with impaired hand function is obtained. The result of the product assessment is compiled by calculating the average rating of the test group for each use case. The test group's results are calibrated proportionally against the calculated correction factor. Packaging and products that pass these usability tests become Easy to Use certified.

Notes

1The certified recycled polymers used in the caps, tops and coatings of some of our carton packages are produced under the ISCC chain of custody attribution method. This means that the plastics are made of a mix of recycled and non-recycled materials, but that the corresponding mass of recycled materials has been tracked throughout the Tetra Pak supply chain.
