Energy-efficient buildings to contribute to reducing climate impact

Background and initiative – factoring in environmental impact

The environmental impact of buildings and facilities on CO2 emissions can be significant. To address this challenge, Tetra Pak aims to integrate energy efficiency and environmental responsibility into all building projects.

Tetra Pak greatly emphasises achieving Gold-level certification from LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for all new projects and major fit-outs. This commitment to energy-efficient building practices is a key factor, even in selecting smaller office spaces.

Results – more energy-efficient factories around the world

Tetra Pak's dedication to energy-efficient buildings is exemplified through various projects. In July 2019, the company inaugurated Vietnam's first-ever aseptic carton packaging material factory in Binh Duong, Vietnam.

This €120 million facility was designed with an expandable capacity of 20 billion packs per annum and is one of the first factories in Vietnam to achieve the demanding LEED Version 4 Gold certification.

Furthermore, Tetra Pak's factory in Chakan, India, is renewing its LEED Gold certification, while certification is underway for parts of its factories in Kunshan and Hohhot, China, and Modena, Italy.

In October 2019, the company opened its new head office in Shanghai, China, within a LEED Platinum-rated development. The newly remodelled 7,600 m2 office was awarded LEED Gold certification for its energy-efficient interior design and construction.

Similarly, in October 2019, Tetra Pak opened a new €25 million site in Olsztyn, Poland, designed and constructed in full compliance with the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), another respected international standard for sustainable building practices.

In all new projects and major fit-outs, where possible, we now aim for Gold-level certification from LEED, a leading international certification standard. Energy efficiency and accreditation of the building are key deciding factors, even in choosing smaller offices.
